Introduction

Teams appear everywhere in the workplace. They may not call themselves teams; they may use terms like task force, committee, group, or panel. But regardless of what they call themselves, the success of these groups depends on whether or not they learn to function as a team.

Effective teams are made up of effective members. Teams that accomplish little and have minimal impact are usually made up of individuals who are more concerned with their own performance or who do not understand what it takes for a team to succeed.

This course shows how to build advanced, high performance teams, from the team leader's perspective. Delegates will be provided with practical guidance in setting direction, targets, goals and purpose for a winning team and successfully cooperates within itself and without with stakeholders. We will also address what team leaders must do to ensure the team has confidence in them by monitoring their own management style and performance and how to monitor what’s happening within the team as they work to realise given objective(s).

Aims of the Course

What skills do team leaders need to contribute to the success of the team? Why is building trust and believability (internally and externally) so important and how can the manager create discipline based on high team morale and motivation?

Agenda

Session 1 – am. Building an advanced team

  • Why teams fail and how to proactively prevent these failures.
  • Identifying the qualities of effective team members and team leaders.
  • From manager to team manager: the specific responsibility of a team manager.
  • Team (re)construction.

Session 2 – pm. Leading an advanced team

  • Reaping the benefits of teamwork and esprit de corps.
  • Team values that cement the team together.
  • Creating a team culture, esteem, pride and loyalty: the role of the mission and vision.
  • The principles shared by all team members.
  • Reconciling personal (team member) interests with those of the team.

Approach

Small classes, less than 5 participants, allow maximum personal attention and interaction using exercises and contract case studies.

Duration

In its ‘off-the-shelf’ form, this is 1-day course. However, the course duration and content can be tailored to suit specific requirements.
